Hemingway :: Essays Papers
Hemmingway Hemingway Heroââ¬â¢ is the foundation for the main charater in all of Hemingwayââ¬â¢s stories. The ââ¬ËHemingway Heroââ¬â¢ is always a man, more so, he is a rough, woodsy type; a real manââ¬â¢s-man. He drinks, he hunts, and he acts first then asks questions later. He goes from one woman to another, and women are good for little more than reproduction. (Shoemaker) He has hopes, dreams, convictions and beliefes which he strictly follows, but he does not talk about them. This is one great example of the ââ¬ËHemingway Heroââ¬â¢ being a man: ââ¬Å"How much did you suffer?â⬠ââ¬Å"Plenty,â⬠replied the old man.â⬠(Ernest Hemingway, ââ¬Å"Old Man and The Seaâ⬠126.) This conversation took place after the old man had been fighting a twelve hundred pound marlin for three days with little drink and only raw fish to eat. This pattern of the ââ¬ËHemingway Heroââ¬â¢ is consistent in all of Hemingwayââ¬â¢s writings. Santiago, from ââ¬Å"The Old Man and the Sea,â⬠has a striking similarity to each of the injured soldiers in ââ¬Å"In Another Country.â⬠All of these men are proud and it is shown in the soldiers thoughts about his medals (Adventures in American Literature 649) and in Santiagoââ¬â¢s belief that a man can be destroyed, but not defeated; which is also major theme in many of Hemingwayââ¬â¢s writings. However, the hero varies from story to story in their realism. In ââ¬Å"In Another Countryâ⬠the characters display a more human quality of emotion, where as Santiago seems to have a super-human restraint and is always stoic. Hemingway uses most every kind of literary device imaginable in his writing. One major item is the use of understatement (Shoemaker), the quote in the second paragraph is an excellent example as is; ââ¬Å"It is very difficult,â⬠he said ââ¬Å"I am utterly unable to resign myself,â⬠(Adventures in American Literature, 651.) This quote is from an injured soldier morning the loss of his recently wed bride.

Reducing School Violence Through Conflict Essay
It is alarming how more and more violent acts are being done by young students these days. A lot of factors can influence them and can be blamed but still there are not enough programs or ways to stop these acts. Everyone, including the media, community, and government, should be involved in this situation because these young people do not realize the graveness and seriousness of their outrages. There is an interrelation between preventing violence and resolving conflict (Johnson & Johnson, 1995, p. 5). This is seen with Project Schools Teaching Options for Peace (S. T. O. P) and The Safe Harbor Program. The former is a conflict resolution program while the latter deals with anti-violence. The two programs produced positive results in that it gave students the opportunity to change with regard to the way they see things. It gave them the chance to talk about what they were dealing and to resolve their conflicts. It made them understand themselves better, as well as to understand their environment and the people that surrounds them better. It made them feel that they are not alone and that there is help when they need it. Young adults or teenagers have a lot on their minds that most older people do not understand. At times, these young people are misunderstood and, therefore, ignored. The problem is, when they are ignored, it is the time when they would probably do things that they would soon regret. This is the reason why it is important that programs that would provide help and support should always be available especially to students. Area Studies and Globalism A Holistic View of Humanity
Area studies are often defined as interdisciplinary fields of research and scholarship that combine a number of disciplines that focus on a particular cultural, national or geographical region. It is really an umbrella for studies that may take a wide path and include subjects like history, literature, geography, sociology, religion, anthropology, political science, economics and history. The idea is to look at a broader base of study and attempt to provide holism. Instead of studying a single country in the Balkans, we might form a curriculum about the Balkans as a region, which includes different cultural, historical and ethnic groups that do share commonalities, but also differences. The idea for this type of study became more popular after World War II - a time in which there was both a push to respond politically to perceived threats (e.g. the Cold War) and to understand the decolonization movements in Africa, Central and South America, and Asia (Szanton, ed., 2004). Certainly, after the fall of the Soviet Union and the opening of China, the world has seen some dramatic changes. Globalism gradually developed over the last few decades because of the increased number of regional trade agreements combined with Internet and phone communication improvements. Globalization has brought the world closer in communication, economics, politics, and especially business.
